After a quieter period we seem to have received quite a few new books.  Here’s an update.

Dig Two Graves - Geldard #5

It seems hard to believe that Heather Peck’s excellent Geldard series is up to number five already!  Dig Two Graves opens where number four The Temenos Remains leaves off, and as usual Geldard is up to his neck in work with one of his team missing and a gruesome murder.  The criminals seem to know what Norfolk CID are about to do next – are they getting inside information?

The long running subplot of an eastern Europe criminal gang is coming to the fore – will Geldard get to the bottom (or top) of it this time?  These books are a great read, packed with detail and lots of accurate local references.

Writing Black Beauty

Many of us will have read Black Beauty as children, or at least heard of it, but did you know that the author, Anna Sewell, was born in Great Yarmouth, and wrote the book at her home in Old Catton, Norwich, a house that still exists today on Spixworth Road?

This new biography of Anna Sewell by Celia Brayfield explores her life with a great deal of thorough research in archives ranging from the Norfolk Records Office to the University of Massachusetts.  It looks particularly at how Anna became passionate about the poor treatment of animals, which eventually led to her writing the famous book, which was only published after her death.

Making Their Way

Author Mary-Anne Garry has been exploring the archives of large country houses for many years now – firstly at Holkham, which resulted in her book Wealthy Masters, and then at Raynham from which she wrote Forward in the World, the biography of the 1st Viscount Townshend.  But at Raynham there was much more, and her research has now produced this new book about Townshend’s two younger sons, Roger and Horatio.  It is an illuminating description of the choices available to wealthy younger sons who were expected to make their own way in the world of the 18th century.

Exploring Norfolk's Deep History Coast

If you’ve walked along the North Norfolk coast recently you will probably have seen notice boards with the ‘Deep History Coast’ mammoth logo and information about the history and geology, part of North Norfolk Council’s tourist information initiative.  This, in effect, is the accompanying book, and the title and logo on the front will immediately link it with the information campaign.

This is a well presented and accessible book suitable for all ages, written in easy language without being patronising, and well illustrated with colour photographs and diagrams.  The authors are Dr. John Davies, formerly Chief Curator for Norfolk Museum Service and Keeper of Archaeology, and Dr. David Waterhouse, a palaeontologist and evolutionary biologist, formerly Senior Curator of Natural History and Geology at NMS, so we can be fairly sure the content is reliable!

An exploration of the geology, natural landscape and the creatures that have inhabited the unique North Norfolk coast.

Philip's Navigator Suffolk
Philip's Local Explorer Suffolk

Philip’s have just issued two new editions of their popular county street atlas. Despite the ubiquity of satellite navigation and Google maps, many people still like to have a printed street atlas, and these have now been updated, both in terms of the content and the format.

The two editions are virtually identical apart from the covers.  The Local Explorer edition is obviously aimed more at visitors as it contains some additional pages listing tourist attractions to visit.  As with the older street atlases, all the roads in villages and towns throughout the county are shown in full detail, with street names and an index.
