Description

The traditional way of life along our coasts, dependent on the sea, vanished in many places in the twentieth century.  A rise in living standards and advancing technology swept away the customs and dialects of the coastal people.  The days when just about every village and town on the coast had its own special type of workboat are almost gone, but in some places these strong local traditions have lingered on.  In other areas there are societies and movements dedicated to keeping alive the traditional boats and customs of the past.

The aim of Forgotten Coast is to record some of the working practices of the age of sail and oar, and something of the places where the traditional way of life has managed to survive.  By describing some of the old working customs, a general picture is drawn of the whole coast, making a record of the old ways before they slip over the horizon of time and beyond recall.

Hardback with 29 colour photographs, 137 black and white photographs and 1 map

About The Author

Robert Simper

Robert Simper’s home has always been in Suffolk.  He was born in Blaxhall, grew up in Bawdsey and has lived most of his life in Ramsholt.  He led a conventional farming life until he had a bad back injury and turned to writing as well as farming and sailing.  He is best known for his series of books about the rivers on the East Coast of England, but has written extensively on traditional work boats all over the world and in 2010 the World Ship Trust awarded him a citation ‘for many years of helping to record and preserve so much of the country’s vintage sailing craft’.

Robert has written over 40 books since his first in 1967.  Many are now out of print – those that Bittern still have are highlighted with links to the product page.
