Description
The traditional way of life along our coasts, dependent on the sea, vanished in many places in the twentieth century. A rise in living standards and advancing technology swept away the customs and dialects of the coastal people. The days when just about every village and town on the coast had its own special type of workboat are almost gone, but in some places these strong local traditions have lingered on. In other areas there are societies and movements dedicated to keeping alive the traditional boats and customs of the past.
The aim of Forgotten Coast is to record some of the working practices of the age of sail and oar, and something of the places where the traditional way of life has managed to survive. By describing some of the old working customs, a general picture is drawn of the whole coast, making a record of the old ways before they slip over the horizon of time and beyond recall.
