Holt is a fascinating north Norfolk town. First mentioned in the Domesday Book, its name is derived from the Saxon word for ‘wood’ establishing itself within the manor as Holt Market. The endowment of a school by Sir John Gresham in the 16th century, with his involvement with the Worshipful Society of Fishmongers and Mercers, gave this small market town increasing status and wealth. Much of its medieval buildings were lost in the great fire of 1708 and their replacement with fine Georgian houses gives much of its historic character today.
The original booklet, written by Peter Brooks in 1972, has undergone a number of revisions. The latest by Elizabeth Larby, archivist at Gresham’s, brings this popular work up to date in 2021.
