Description
A companion volume to Mascot Media’s highly popular The Printmaker’s Cat, this new book features the dog-themed art of 76 UK printmakers. There are more than 380 linocuts, wood engravings, collagraphs, woodcuts, etchings, monoprints and screenprints of dogs, plus anecdotes about their beloved pets by many of the contributing artists. The 168 pages of this softback book are crammed with a large variety of styles and some 50 breeds of dog. Great for art lovers and dog lovers alike.
The inclusion of dogs in art is hardly a new phenomenon. Ever since they first befriended mankind they have been recorded as working animals, pets, or simply aesthetically pleasing objects. The remains of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii yielded a dog mosaic. Marble statues of greyhound like dogs have been found dating back to the first century AD, As the Renaissance delivered its onslaught of cultural creativity, dogs began to appear more frequently as companions rather than just workers. Venice in the 16th century was awash with dog-adorned images. While the cat in art has tended to be frowned upon by the establishment, there is barely a name on the honour roll of painters that isn’t associated with at least one canine-inspired masterpiece. So this book is long overdue.
