Description
The Thames is a very political river, its past and future arouses great passions, but this work adds a little to the record of a truly great estuary. The purpose of this book is to recall the tidal River Thames of the past, particularly the ways of the working river which have been swept away. It is not possible to record the history of every part of this mighty river in detail, it is more a case of following the trends and using a few photographs to tell a vast story.
Robert Simper’s book contains some 155 photographs documenting the history of the tideway through the 20th century, from the outer reaches of the estuary at Canvey Island, up to the head of the tidal Thames at Teddington Lock. Each photograph has explanatory text, describing what it shows and the history it represents. Overall the book provides a picture of the river and how it has changed over the course of the century.
