DCI Greg Geldard arrived in Norfolk several books ago (this is the fourth in Heather Peck’s excellent series). The story opens with Greg being woken by a Facetime call from his ex-wife, demanding his immediate presence to deal with a threatening phone call. His current girlfriend, Chris, who is also his sergeant, is not overly impressed that he jumps in the car to rush off to her! So before the end of the first chapter we already have an interesting set of personal relationships.
Greg is recalled to police headquarters at Wymondham to pick up another case: a body has been found at an archaeological dig at Caistor St. Edmund, and the modern dental fillings suggest that it probably isn’t of Roman origin. A search on the police database finds two more similar cases: all three were young women, unidentified, and buried with a coin in their mouths. Add to that some loose ends from previous cases linking up to major crime connections and Greg’s team have their hand’s full.
As with all of Heather Peck’s books, The Temenos Remains is well written and well researched. Heather uses local settings in Norfolk accurately and deals sensitively with issues of trafficking and modern slavery. A thoroughly good read which stands on it’s own, even if you haven’t read the earlier books (which I would strongly recommend doing).
