Viking East Anglia

This book presents the exciting new evidence that has emerged in recent years for the presence and role of the Vikings in East Anglia. Examining the region as a whole, through its former existence as the Kingdom of East Anglia, the book charts the appearance of the Vikings, their murder of the local king Edmund (subsequently celebrated as a saint nationally), and their settlement and way of life. It shows how the Vikings became central to the identity of the region and their role in the emergence of towns like Thetford and Norwich. The book incorporates the latest research in an easily-readable format, using historical, archaeological, place-name and numismatic evidence. It is illustrated throughout, with over 90 photos, maps and line drawings, most in full colour.

The author, Tim Pestell is a specialist in the Early Medieval period and has worked on the archaeology of the East Anglian region for over twenty years. He is Senior Curator of Archaeology at Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery.
