Description
This book shows how the village of Ashill, a rural community in Norfolk, has evolved over time. It introduces the reader to many of its notable people, from all ranks of Ashill society, who, over the centuries, have contributed to the community’s story.
While describing the part played in Ashill’s history by the lords of its manors, rectors and landowners, particular focus is given to the lives of the ordinary people of the village: the bondmen, yeomen and tenant farmers—the craftsmen, labourers and their wives and widows. It examines the effect of changes in landscape, the conflicts over common rights and tithes, and the campaigns of agricultural labourers for a better livelihood.
Although of particular relevance to those who live in or know Ashill, it also has much to offer anyone interested in the history and evolution of rural communities in East Anglia over time.
