Norfolk has always seemed a fairly safe place to live with seemingly low crime levels.  But going by this month’s crop of books I think we need to be seriously concerned!

As is the case with many books now, Judi Daykin’s books have been available as eBooks for some time and have sold tens of thousands of copies, but have not been readily available in print.  Now Bittern Books has agreed with the publisher, Joffe Books, to distribute Judi’s books in our region.

This exciting series is set in North Norfolk and delivers the atmosphere of the wide, brooding skies in rural and coastal locations around the county.  DS Sara Hirst moves from London and the Met to take up a post in Norfolk, where she believes she might be able to trace the father she has never met.  But in the first book, Under Violent Skies, her first day is interrupted by the discovery of a body in a ditch on farmland near Happisburgh (or Haze-brer as she is instructed!).  And a further shock awaits when the victim is identified.

This isn’t just a murder story.  Judi brings in issues of rural crime, modern slavery, human trafficking and some of the challenges facing an officer of mixed race.  And it’s a good read.

Spinning Into The Dark

Another popular Norfolk detective, DCI Greg Geldard, is back in this latest book from Heather Peck.

Set in the last months of 2020 and early in 2021 DCI Greg Geldard and his colleagues investigate major crimes as the country copes with Covid 19 lockdowns, rules that change faster than the weather, and a raft of new restrictions and frustrations.

With his partner Chris just home from hospital, a baby on the way and a ten year-old murder to solve, Greg really doesn’t need any distractions. But when cyclists start vanishing on the county’s empty roads, Greg can’t ignore the pattern. Are the disappearances tragic accidents, or is something more sinister happening?

Greg is also determined not to abandon the search for justice in his cold case. He’s certain a breakthrough is imminent. But as the body count rises, he must race against time to uncover the truth – before the next cyclist disappears for good.
