This may be the last ‘new books’ email in this form, as I’m setting up a more automated system that sends out an email up to once a week with details of any new books we’ve added in that period.  If we haven’t added anything, then no email.  The benefit is that you will get to know about new books much sooner, and I don’t have to write this every month!  Your feedback is welcome of course, and if you really don’t like it, there’s always an unsubscribe button at the bottom. And I may still occasionally post a review about a specific book or author that catches my attention.

My Life in a Garden

Carl Gorham is a writer and musician who has written scripts for a number of successful television comedies and an earlier book which won the East Anglia Book Award for Best Autobiography in 2017.

In 2005 Carl and his wife Vikki bought a house with a large garden in Lower Bodham, near Holt in Norfolk.  Two years later Vikki’s death left Carl with a six year old daughter – and the large garden.  Carl was not a gardener, but he decided to take on the challenge.  This is the story of his relationship with the garden and how it helped him cope with his loss, told with humour and love.  It’s an entertaining, and moving, story and has already had a lot of publicity, including an article in the Daily Telegraph.  Not just for gardeners, but many will certainly relate to the trials and tribulations of Carl’s experience.

Words From the Hedge

Richard Negus is one of the few professional hedge layers left in East Anglia – but he is not what you might expect.  A former Household Cavalry soldier, he is as skilled with the pen – or keyboard – as he is with a chainsaw.  Words From the Hedge tells us about his work and the people he works with in an entertaining and enthralling way.  Here is everything you need to know about hedges – although this isn’t a practical guide – and a lot about the countryside of Norfolk and Suffolk where he works.

It’s a good read in a well produced hardback book from the interesting, crowd funded publisher, Unbound.  Recommended.

J K Stanford - Ornithologist, Conservationist, Writer

J.K. Stanford was one of the 20th century’s foremost figures in conservation, ornithology, and rural life.  Between fighting in both World Wars, he served as a colonial civil servant, administering British Burma. He became a highly regarded author whose numerous works of fiction were well received, alongside expert non-fiction, and was an ornithologist and conservationist with a particular interest in the avocet.

Some Trust in Chariots is the first and long overdue biography of JK Stanford. Exclusive access to his private archive has revealed him to be something of a polymath and a man of great flair, talent, wit, compassion, and accomplishment. This book brings his work to the fore and tells the story of his life from an objective but sympathetic perspective.
