Wally Webb is best known as a presenter on BBC Radio Norfolk – and perhaps as the inspiration for Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge – but he’s had a long and varied career. Now in his seventies and retired from the BBC Wally and his wife Sheri have put together this entertaining biography.
This is a journey through a lifetime from early childhood in post war years through schooling leading to numerous jobs in the time of flower power and Mods on scooters. A decade with the RAF found him hiding from the SAS and later leading a double life, running a successful mobile disco in his spare time and then moving into nightclubs.
When BBC Radio Norfolk first came to Norwich they turned him down but he persisted and a chance meeting gave him his opportunity. His time with the BBC started when there was freedom to create spoofs and play his own choice of music. Over four decades Wally produced many programmes and visited every part of Norfolk, meeting innumerable stars, getting involved in banger racing and wrestling and adapting as new technology began to change the face of the industry. Still going strong in his seventies, the Covid pandemic finally brought his broadcasting career to an end. Well, not quite.
Ah-haaa! It’s Wally Webb The Biography is the story of someone who turned down other opportunities to stay in the place he loved, with the people he loved. It documents his personal life as well as his public life – he married three times and eventually became reunited with a son he thought he’d lost. This candid and honest biography reveals his inner thoughts, personal trials and his passion for broadcasting.
Is Wally Webb the real Alan Partridge? Read the book and decide for yourself.
