Poetry and Prose

We don’t often get books of poetry but we’ve had two new ones in this month, plus another of short pieces of prose alongside stunning photographs.  All three will make great Christmas gifts – not too demanding but lovely to dip into.  Take a look at the full descriptions on our website where we’ve included extracts.

Great War Diaries

Honor Elwes lived in a village in West Norfolk from 1889 to 1959 and kept a diary for most of her life.  Juliet Webster previously published extracts from 1912 in The Yellow Caravan, but these diaries are a largely unedited and complete transcript of the war years of 1914-18 and include clippings of maps, victories and defeats, poetry and cartoons.  Honor’s health meant she was unable to go to France, but her younger sister Win drove an ambulance, and her letters are included. This two-volume set is a remarkable document of village life in Norfolk set in the context of world events.

The Great War Diary of Honor Elwes

This 2-volume set is a tale of family, friends, neighbours and local boys who went to the front and what befalls them all.  Honor Elwes recorded daily local hearsay, whether spies have been seen and where bombs dropped, and accounts of the war from newspapers of the time.

Norfolk Crime Wave

Norfolk is really a relatively crime free county, but if you read all the crime fiction you might think otherwise!  In The Sillingham Robins retired actress Tuppence living in Sheringham recruits some friends to help solve a crime.  This could be the Norfolk version of the Thursday Murder Club!

And good news for David Blake fans, his next book, Blackfleet Broad, is now expected to come in before Christmas and should be available for pre-order very soon.  But in the meantime why not try Judi Daykin‘s excellent Sara Hirst series which we now have in stock.

An entertaining, compassionate and witty novel, full of hope about old and young working together set in North Norfolk.
