Norfolk artist HJ Jackson produced his first linocut print 70 years ago as a schoolboy. Supported by a surprisingly open-minded and forward-looking family, he was encouraged to develop his artistic abilities and seek a creative career. Having embraced linocutting – a ‘new’ and vibrant form of printmaking – at such an early age, he honed his skills in spite of the distractions of National Service and his day job. As time passed, he traded in his bag of sketchbooks for a camera, so that his source material changed from pencil to photographic.
This book is a showcase of pencil, pen, crayon and painted images that bridge the gap between what HJ has seen on his travels and the prints produced later in the studio. Many ideas and images missed from earlier books are included here. This portfolio also illustrates a fascination with his immediate surroundings during art school years and beyond, and a desire to record the changing face of Norwich, rural Norfolk and traditional industries such as the railway and fishing.
The drawings in Drawn to Print vary from field sketches to more draughtsman-like plans and elevations. They are all equally captivating. This book will evoke fond memories, provide intriguing insights into artistic methods and entertain with increasingly colourful images of objects and places – all through the eyes of one highly original individual.
