Travelling back to Norwich’s past

It’s not easy to write for the ‘young adult’ market, and less easy to get them interested in the past, but David Viner has attempted to do both with his Norwich time travelling series. The protagonist is Cassie, a 17 year old girl from Norwich who comes under attack from strange forces as she walks through Castle Mall, and finds herself transported through time into events from the city’s past. David has skilfully created page turning thrillers that bend the mind around concepts of time travel and the paradox of meeting yourself at a different age, while at the same time introducing real episodes from local history.

In Time Portals of Norwich Cassie is thrown around in time in the company of an older woman, Kay, who seems to know a lot about Cassie. Pursued by unearthly creatures intent upon their capture or, worse, their death, their only escape is via portals that take them to different places and times in Norwich’s recent history. Cassie must figure out who is behind the attacks, who made the portals and how to stop time itself from ending.

Time’s Revenge continues Cassie’s story and takes her to join Robert Kett’s famous rebellion of 1549 before exiling her to the Stone Age with her recent memories wiped and her time-travelling abilities gone. There, she must uncover her missing memories and come to terms with the real reason she finds herself marooned in the deep past, which turns out to be something that she dare not undo without affecting not only her own history but that of her entire family.

Having managed to return to the present, Cassie is determined to find out why she appears to have been manipulated all her life. This time she is on the attack but will she be able to tie up all the loose ends? Time’s Paradox weaves itself in, out and around the earlier books in the Time Portals series to make the reader question what they thought they already knew about Cassie’s previous adventures.

David Viner has lived in Norwich for most of his life and has drawn upon his own experiences of living and working in the ‘Fine City’ to weave a strong tale around a teenage heroine that leaves the reader wanting more. He has crafted a fantasy adventure which places the characters in real situations from Norwich’s past, pits them against a number of Norwich’s famous ‘ghosts’ and surrounds them with mysteries that they need to resolve in order to understand how to begin to fight back against the real villain of the story.

The Time Portals series is suitable for young adults of 13 upwards but can also be enjoyed by those many decades older, especially anyone fascinated by time travel and the paradoxes it can create when you meet yourself at a different age!
