Susan, Thomas and David Yaxley

The Larks Press was founded by Susan Yaxley in 1985, in part to provide work for her disabled son Thomas.  In the early days many of their books were typeset by hand and printed on a vintage hand press.

Over the years that followed, Susan and Thomas published over 170 books, receiving the inaugural East Anglian Book Awards Exceptional Contribution Award in 2015.  But following a severe stroke, she passed away in 2016.

Susan’s husband, David, himself a historian, writer and accomplished artist, continued to sell from the Larks Press back catalogue until he too died last year.  Their younger son, Rob, has now decided to wind up the business and is disposing of the remaining stock.  I met with Rob earlier this year and agreed to take some of the remaining titles, which we now have in stock.

Ghost Fields of Norfolk and Ghost Fields of Suffolk, both by Rod McKenzie add to the existing documentation of historic airfields with photographs and plans gathered on the ground, through the author’s personal surveys of the sites.  This new material is combined with historic information to provide handbooks for aviation history enthusiasts and those curious about these sites.

Nall’s Glossary of East Anglian Dialect is a bible for researchers and historians trying to make sense of the language our region, as is David Yaxley’s A Researcher’s Glossary, which includes many terms used in old legal documents and the like.

Bryant’s Map of Norfolk reprints this early detailed map from 1826 which predates Ordnance Survey, as does Hodkinson’s Map of Suffolk in 1783.  Both of these are reproduced in A4 book format at a scale of approximately 1 inch to the mile, similar to the later OS maps, and show the counties before the many changes of the 19th century took place.

Finally we have included the Larks Press Pocket Biography series.  These A6 sized booklets provide a perfect introduction to many Norfolk historic personalities – people such as Nelson, Edith Cavell, Thomas Paine, Boudicca and many more.

Also shown below are some of Mary-Anne Garry’s books, which we have had for some time, but were originally published by Larks Press.

The story of the siege and surrender of King’s Lynn in 1643.
