The last month or so has been fairly quiet for new books, although we have added a few that have been out a while or recently reprinted.  Two notable new books address Norfolk history: Mike Page has been photographing historic locations from around the county, with descriptions and notes by his collaborator Pauline Young, and Great Yarmouth historian Colin Tooke has revised and updated his history of the watering holes of Great Yarmouth.

After a year of running Bittern Books virtually single handed, I have now taken on an assistant, Andy, to work in the office and pack orders. I have to say he keeps it a lot tidier than I do!  We have also taken on some extra storage space and acquired some additional shelving (apparently originally used in Jarrolds bookshop!) making the space a lot more presentable.  So if you would prefer to look around and choose your books we are happy to accept visits from wholesale customers (but by appointment only please).

Historic Norfolk from the Air – Mike Page and Pauline Young

Historic Norfolk from the Air

Mike Page has been flying his Cessna 150 and taking photographs over Norfolk and Suffolk for over 25 years and in that time has published many books, often in collaboration with Pauline Young who writes the text.  Now in his eighties, he is still flying (with a co-pilot!) and taking photographs, and this, his latest book just published, highlights historic Norfolk locations with explanations and context by Pauline.

It is always fascinating to see well known places from the air, and although we have become used to having access to satellite imagery, Mike’s photographs from a lower perspective offer so much more.  Dipping into this book, you will also find places you may never have visited or even knew existed.  This hardback volume would grace any coffee table, and also make a lovely gift or memento of a Norfolk visit.

The Inns and Taverns of Great Yarmouth and Gorleston

The Inns and Taverns of Great Yarmouth and Gorleston

Colin Tooke has written many books covering the history of Great Yarmouth and Gorleston and he is an acknowledged expert on the area.  This book is as thoroughly researched and detailed as ever.  After explaining the differences between inns, taverns and alehouses, and a potted history of the general evolution of pubs in the area, Colin gives us a detailed history of pretty much every ‘pub’ that has existed in Yarmouth and Gorleston with plenty of photographs, old and not so old, to illustrate the changes.

The final chapter records the history of brewing in the town, especially that of the famous Lacons brewery, which closed in 1968 after being taken over by Whitbreads, with the name being resurrected by a new venture in 2013.  This is so much more than a pub crawlers guide!

Out and About

With Andy working back in the office I have been able to get out and about a bit more and visit some of the wonderful bookshops and other outlets we deal with.  It is lovely to be able to meet our customers again and get feedback on what’s selling.  I have also come across some books that are only being sold in a few local shops and we are in the process of trying to get some of those added to our range – it’s always exciting to find a new author.  More news on that soon I hope.

We have also been able to arrange some visits from two of our authors.  David Blake was in the region in April to launch his latest book, Long Gore Hall, and we arranged signing events for him at Waterstone’s in Norwich and Lowestoft, Roys in Wroxham and Beccles Bookshop.  He also called in at a number of other shops around the Broads.

Jonathan Falkner, author of An Affinity of Place, was also in the area in May and I took him to visit some of our customers in the Broads – seen here at The Big Shop at Womack Staithe (Ludham).
