Another bumper month for new arrivals, with some very exciting additions to our range.  Keeping us busy right now is the latest from David Blake: Stokesby Grave is number 12 in the incredibly popular Tanner series of Norfolk crime fiction and we have already sold over 600 copies in advance orders.

We also have Angela Harding‘s beautiful new book Still Waters and Wild Waves.  For anyone not familiar with her work, Angela is a print artist and this book is filled with not only many of her prints, but also sketches, photographs and text describing her travels around Suffolk, Norfolk and all the way up the east coast to Orkney.  Presented in hardback, this will make a lovely Christmas present for anyone who loves the coast and nature.

Broadland, a new book on the history, geology and landscape of the Broads by Tom Williamson, Professor of Landscape History at UEA, and Alison Yardy, Landscapes Project Office at Norfolk County Council, brought my attention to the University of Hertfordshire Press, from whom we have also taken two other books with local interest.  Whilst these books are somewhat academic in nature, they have content that will be of great interest to many local history enthusiasts.  Broadland is a fascinating and in depth study of the region and its development, including the effects of human influence on the landscape.  It is a substantial book, well illustrated with maps, diagrams and photographs, and great value at £16.99.

The other two books from UHP are Managing for Posterity, which is a study of family estates in Norfolk, particularly focusing on the Le Strange family of Hunstanton, and A Very Dangerous Locality, which is a study of the impact of the second world war on the Suffolk coast, identifying many of the installations and fortifications established during the mid-twentieth century.

Gentleman Collectors from Poppyland is also something of a niche interest book, which uncovers the world of Victorian and Edwardian taxidermists in Norfolk, which included eminent naturalists, ornithologists and collectors – at the time, collecting ‘specimens’ was considered a scientific activity. There were over eighty taxidermists working in Norfolk in the hundred year period of its greatest popularity, an era that became known as ‘the dark days of collecting.’

We have also added three more titles from Mascot Media.  Arthropedia from Norwich-based artist and insect enthusiast Vanna Bartlett is a collection of wonderful colour plates of moths, butterflies, bees, wasps, spiders, hoverflies, shieldbugs, grasshoppers, dragonflies, woodlice and many many more species celebrating of the rich diversity of life that sits towards the bottom of the food chain. Harry Becker’s Suffolk takes the form of a sketchbook, showing and describing Suffolk rural life from 1913-1928. With many of the pictures previously unpublished, it is a unique snapshot of farm life and landscape through the artist’s eyes. And we are very pleased to have copies of the magnificent HJ Jackson: Drawn to Print.

Last, but by no means least, Wells-next-the-Sea: The Long Last Century is now available as a paperback edition.  If you haven’t come across this, it is a comprehensive history of Wells from 1859 to 1999 drawing on local newpapers and oral histories from residents.  It documents the development of Wells from an industrial and trading town to a modern tourist destination.
