The Illustrated Garden

Description

Gardens have always provided inspiration for artists, but while watercolour and oils were preferred by the great painters, printmakers allowed publishers to provide multiple copies at lower cost.  The traditional techniques of etching, wood engraving and lithography were applied to achieve this repeatability of images in print.  But more than just a substitute for painting, printmaking with a variety of methods allows the artist to interpret garden scenes in a totally different way.  This book will leave readers in no doubt that woodblocks, linocuts, screenprints, collagraphs, etchings and monoprints can take garden art well beyond the boundaries of painting.

In The Illustrated Garden, sixty-nine UK printmakers contribute around 520 images across 224 beautifully printed pages. Text by the author adds the background of each artist and an explanation of their technique.  Not only are there scenes of gardens, grand and modest, but allotments, greenhouses, sheds, wildflower meadows, plant studies, flower arrangements and even garden wildlife.
