Slow Travel and Other New Books

We’ve had quite a lot of new books coming in this month, plus one or two expected shortly, so this is a round up to make sure I’ve told you about all of them.

I’m aware that sometimes these posts don’t format very well in emails.  If you have any trouble reading it you can find it, with all our posts, on our website at https://bitternbooks.co.uk/slow-travel-and-other-new-books/

Bradt Slow Travel Guides

The Bradt slow travel guides have been around a while, but there is a new Norfolk edition and I’ve taken the opportunity to add the Suffolk edition, and another book from Bradt, Cycling in East Anglia.

Bradt started out publishing international guides for backpackers and hikers, but when they started to explore ideas for guides to Great Britain, they wanted to get away from the usual ‘top sights’ formula and bring out the nuances and local differences that make up a sense of place – such things as food, building styles, nature, geology or local people and what makes them tick.

So these guides focus on sustainable travel – walking, cycling and public transport – and the quieter parts of our counties and will appeal to the many people who are not interested in the bustle of the city.  Personally I love the Bradt philosphy: “Don’t rush it, get to know an area – and the people who live there – and you will be delighted by what you find.”

Cycling in East Anglia provides detailed descriptions of 21 family oriented rides across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire following quiet roads and trails.  Most rides are circular and around 20-30km, so ideal for an easy day ride.

Local, Characterful Guides to Britain's Special Places

This new edition of Bradt’s Norfolk turns the spotlight on this county of contrasts, from the fine city of Norwich to the watery wilderness of the Broads and the sweeping beaches of the superlative north coast.

Taverham

Today, Taverham is generally considered to be a suburb of Norwich, a large and popular housing estate on the north-western edge. But historically it was an independent village on the River Wensum, mostly owned by Norwich Cathedral Priory.

The author, Judy Sims, has spent many years studying the history of Taverham, working through the many records available, to present this detailed and thorough history of over 500 pages in a hardback edition.
